PostSubject: More Rubbish   Thu Jan 19, 2012 7:13 pm

Today was another early start and as a company we were busy, so i decided to drive our largest truck to our new site to allow our drivers to perform other duties, everything was prepared and ready to go. We had to take 67' and 117 tonnes of truck along a BOAT which had been prepared for us by the local authority, they widened it and reinforced it to take the ground pressure of the truck, so all was well with the world, apart from limited travelling hours as we had time restrictions. All went well until we entered the BOAT upon which we found a load of rubbish had been dumped. It was a load as well, we could see asbestos, and several tonnes of it, so we contacted the local authority on their emergency number.
Fortunately, their Environmental department reacted immediately when they found out about our travelling time restrictions, we did not have time to reverse the truck out and travel back to the factory and we could not reverse off the BOAT and leave the truck on the road because it would have blocked it, so they came and assessed it, they got a contractor out immediately who had it removed within 6 hours from our initial telephone call.

Apart from such dross who fly tip this toxic waste we were extremely annoyed by these actions which cost us both time and money, the lane had been travelled by one of our scouts at 10.00pm the previous evening and it was now 5.30am, so we could narrow down this fly tipping to a 7.5 hour window.

Speaking to the Environmental Officer revealed some of the things often dumped, and asbestos was a common item, in his time he had seen everything from the normal vehicles dumped, right through to toxic chemicals so toxic over a Hectare of land had to be cordoned off and specialised contractors bought in, wearing full chemical suits to deal with the waste. He did offer some useful advice though.

If you see fly tipped waste never approach it, take a picture of it if possible, but from a distance, note the date and time, and the name of the lane in which it is dumped along with a grid reference if possible. Contact the local authority immediately if possible, or as soon as possible, and pass on these details you have collected. This will give them a timeframe to ascertain what has been dumped, and when, and they can liase with the local Police to see if they stopped any suspicious vehicles who were carrying waste. Send the picture by E-mail so the local authority have some form of evidence as often many forms of fly tipped waste may be blown away.
Make a note of any vehicles in the area which do not seem to fit there, maybe a pick up on a green lane which does not have four wheel drive, and if possible get its registration number, a picture is better, and a description of the occupants. Never put yourself at risk by blatently taking a picture of a suspicious vehicle or its occupants, use your judgement.
