we've just shipped our Landy to Oz and it was 7 to 8 weeks stored in a container before it saw the light of day again. We were worried about mould growth so all of our clothes and bedding were vacuum packed and the mattress in the roof tent was also wrapped in cling film. Before wrapping the mattress it was dried out indoors for a couple of weeks then liberally sprayed with a can of Dettol.

The inside of the Land Rover was also stripped as far as I could and cleaned then also liberally sprayed with Dettol.

When we got Bluey back everything was mould free and relatively fresh smelling - result!!

Thats a good tip.
I have heard story's where people open up their containers and go to get there vehicle out only to encounter mould and damp on various items.


Which is a surprise to me as most cargo containers or at least the ones I have seen have alot of rubber seal and are securely closed, you would think that there is not alot of ways damp and mould could develop.

Yep, a good tip. Should have vacuum packed the interior of my caravan I reckon. Went in there today and it smelt well musty, and that was only from the last Land Rover show at Peterborough start of September. Bet the emergency bedding under the seating is like a mushroom farm now.

Didn't look, waiting until 'er indoors comes back from visiting her parents, then I'll aim her in that general direction. She likes washing!!!

Itis mainloy because of the tremendous amount of CONDENSATION that occurs with containers with changes of temparature.

Great piece of advice. Making vacuum bags and packing could very costly I guess or what?

True that new containers are well sealed. We store a bit in containers outside, one trip ones that are virtually new. They are dry as a bone with no damp problem. Problems happen when stuff is sealed into the containers that is damp or in containers in which the wooden floors have got soaked. Shut anything up in this warm damp environment and you will get problems. Probably luck of the draw when it comes to shipping stuff abroad in used containers as to whether they have any damp in them or not i'd say.
