PostSubject: Range Rover Classic   Mon Nov 21, 2011 6:49 pm

Looking for some advice as regards Range Rover Classics after promising myself one of these for years Very Happy it is now or never as these are becoming rarer and I am becoming older. Looking for 300tdi auto with soft dash in about average condition. I am hoping to use this purely for greenlaning/overlanding/ hoping to buy spring/summer next year. I have mentioned other vehicles in the past but this is purely a decision of the heart. So any advice as what to look out for other than rusting tail gates and arches would be appreciated. cheers1

The major probem with soft dash models is the air suspension, 'cause back then they hadn't got it quite right like on modern RR models. I would still go for it yes, but I'd have it back on coils quicker then you can say "collapsed front end!" Smile

A couple of interesting articles ...

On the subject of the air suspension compressor faults:

Many of the faults are with wear in the compressor itself, they were cheap units manufactured from cheap materials and the wear is predominantly in the piston seal of the compressor, or bore wear. In many cases the piston seal just gives up the ghost and cracks or breaks up which throws the piston out of alignment and while it still generates air it is at a greatly reduced rate, and the additional friction is what wears the piston bore out, or overloads the electric drive motor and blows the fuses, the resulting heat generates the fault codes.

Two options exist, buy a secondhand unit from a breaker, but ensure it comes with a warranty of at least three months as standing the units for a long period can cause the seal to crack, and ensure the breaker has tested it fully on the vehicle before dismantling it. Option two is to pay much more for a new unit, many aftermarket suppliers provide uprated new or reconditioned units for a fraction of the price of a main dealer part.

Are they difficult to change? not really for anyone able to wield the spanners, about 5 minutes to take out and about 15 minutes to replace and test properly.

I've suddenly gone off Range Rovers. sick

That's truly horrendous, but I have to agree with the owner - "YOU WONT FIND ANOTHER ONE LIKE THIS". Too damn right ... thank goodness.

Personally I'd never consider jacking up a Rangie, but if I ever did I would be proud to have it looking as sound as this example:-

Not bad for a 1972 vehicle.

It shifted too!

Had the pleasure of going shopping in Carlisle today with the family then to the cinema to see Puss in Boots fell asleep through most of it, the main good point was that I spotted a garage next to the car park where we parked.
Had a couple of interesting 4x4'sincluding an austin champ being restored and a k plate LR90 200 tdi pick up that was on a local estate and has only done 35k miles looked immaculate but was pricey. Also said that they have a diesel RRC that had just been traded in for a disco, was not at the garage but hope to hear from them soon. Very Happy

Need to find one soon or will be using terracan to go to europe this summer(which I would be more than happy with), which ever I go with willl try and post pictures of any mods and plans we have on the post I have started about our trip to europe and the alps.

Del
