PostSubject: Homemade Sankey Camper (Ugly but Effective)   Sat Nov 05, 2011 7:39 am

Was looking at the efforts of rustyrhino (Sankey Trailer) on this forum at felt somewhat chastened at my own efforts.

It started when I was looking at roof tents, when I saw this monster:
http://www.boab.biz/atcampers_home.htm

....but given its 6,500 quid price tag (in kit form) I figured I'd just take a cheaper route.

Paid 250 quid for the wide track Sankey.
Left the rust holes unrepaired for extra drainage. Rolling Eyes
Changed the 24v over to 12v
Fitted 235/16 wheels and tyres off my cannibalised 1994 Range Rover
Bolted 4 roofbars across the open trailer
A couple of steel sand ladders even fitted perfectly across the front of the box,
resting on the A-frame

And even with the 19kg gas bottle inside, 2x35L storage boxes, a petrol generator,
a twin burner gas stove, and a chainsaw,
there was still room for the 1.5m x 0.5m x 0.6m
watertight ex-mil ammunition coffin for extra stowage.....
and secured all under the Autohome Rooftent.

Pull up anywhere I can drop the supports legs, level it out, and pop the tent...
From ignition off to safely bedded down in 8 minutes.
Which is kind of handy when its -30c.

My motto when it comes to fixing, making, or jury rigging stuff?

Its ugly but effective

The Sankey has covered over 30,000 miles, from snow and ice to desert sand
and mud, from mountains to the sea, its been crashed into 3 times, has provided
warmth, shelter, and sustenance along the way,
and has never failed.

Gotta be happy with that.

Indeed, a very good way of saving money. If it suits your needs and purpose then regardless of its appearance its a win.

Well done. thumbsup

Perfect Smile Cool pics by the way Smile

Exactly as you say it does the job. None of our overland stuff is pretty either. Don't really see the point!

I think maadmaan10 was talking about LaContra's trailer link from November 2011 which is now dead - http://lacontra4x4.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/truck-and-sankey-trailer-pics/

not maika's spam Vietnam travel agency link.
