PostSubject: New Cooper Tread (With Pics)   Sun Aug 21, 2011 5:06 pm

While getting a puncture repaired this weekend at my local tyre store, He just had delivered a set of new Cooper tyres and they looked like the Muts Nuts. They were the Cooper Discoverer AT3 and the Cooper discoverer ST MAXX. According to him they are replacing the AT/R & ST Discoverer pattern due to road noise regulations and what type of oils are used in their construction.

Prices in my tyre size of 245 75 16 were £99 per tyre, £110 fitted per tyre.

Does anyone own a set yet?

Known about this company for years - Sinton Tyres in Milton Keynes. http://www.sintontyres.co.uk In fact wrote an artice for a 4x4 magazine about them once; good reputation. Sinton of course, not me! Rolling Eyes

I believe they used to be the official importer for Cooper Tires in the UK, maybe still are?

Noise regulations have been around for a while now, the dreaded EU regulations strike again, and all new tyres have to comply with ever increasing legislation concerning the reduction of tyre noise.

As for the oils, basically many traditional tyres use oils of various kinds in their manufacture as its in the rubber and the synthetic compounds they now use to blend with the rubber, it is the specific oils which are bitumen based which has to be cut, we have already seen many reductions in bitumen based products, creasote being the most popular banned item. This restriction is now passing to many other items or products containing such compounds.

When tyres are disposed of they break down and leach many substances into the ground which contaminates it, tyres are no different, but, those complying with the legislation on tyre disposal are fine but it is the fly tippers and those disposing of tyres illegally who are the problem, they dump them anywhere quiet where they are unseen while dumping.

Sinton tyres are still the official importers, but many of the Cooper brand are now made here in their UK factory and Sinton are their official distributors as well.

I had one cooper and one of the new pattern general grabber tyres from my local supplier to look over when I was looking to pick a tyre for the Landy Rally the grabber was about £15 a corner more expensive but I choose them as they came highly recommended from 3 friends one has a Jeep one a Landy 110 and the other a L200 pick up they could not say a bad thing about them and to me the Cooper was an unknown.
The tread pattern's were not that different but the side wall on the grabber seemed more robust.

I paid £125 a tyre fitted size 255 75 17 the Coopers were the same as you have been quoted £110.
I also looked at the Avon all road but it wasn't available in my size

Actually, the Cooper STT has the strongest sidewall of any tyre, this is a three ply lamination with reinforcing instead of the unreinforced two ply construction of all other tyres.

Just goes to show you can/t always tell by the look, what's the saying don't judge a book by the cover, I stand corrected.

Still happy with my purchase though, a little more road noise than the Perelli snow and ice tyres that I had before but hopefully should provide more grip on the gravel tracks and the grass verges that are the ML's domain Very Happy Very Happy

Actively went seeking sponsorship from Armstrong Tyres for the Paris-Dakar as they have kevlar reinforced side walls. One set took me to Dakar with only two punctures, neither in the side walls I hasten to add. First class.

Wideformat:

Thats the beauty of these forums, we learn from others, and are all more knowledgeable for it.

There are specialised tyres with stronger sidewalls, but they are for specialised applications and with specialised prices to match, and many manufacturers are looking to the various composites in their manufacture as they become cheaper to purchase and easier to work with.

With tyre patterns like the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar and Michelin Latitude Cross, would the tyres on the opposite side have to be run in the opposite direction or back to front due to the non-symetrical tyre tread? Just from looking at the pictures.....

Sorry I know that this is an old topic.

I am running a set of Cooper ST MAXX on my Hilux 265/75/16 on 8j rims. I have done 10 000 proplem free miles so far with them. They were part of the first 200 which was imported by Silverline from America.

I had BFG AT's on before and I have to say the ST MAXX is by far better then the BFG AT's in the wet and off road, less road noise and very strong side walls. I dont think I will ever go back to BFG again.
