PostSubject: Hello from Cairo   Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:59 pm

Just a quick hello to introduce myself.
I currently live in Cairo, have done for the last 4 years but I'll be moving to Jordan after the summer, to Amman. I'm originally from Mansfield (and not the only one it seems!) and I am now more or less retired and looking after my three kids while the wife works.
I had several jobs around Nottinghamshire, initially as a mechanic for the Coal Board, but eventually I worked for a company leading overland trips across from the UK to Nepal and also through and around Africa to Capetown in Bedford 4x4's.
I now run a Mitsibishi Pajero diesel (known in the UK as a Shogun?) which is surprisingly good in the desert.
I'll have a look round the boards and maybe post a few things to get going.
Hello again.

Sutton-in-?????? scratch "Up Norf", that's good enough.

Welcome mate. Given your previous overland connections, I bet you have a fair few campfire tales to tell. Pleeeeeaaassseee stick around, we wanna hear 'em! Twisted Evil

I'll let you know there's nothing wrong with Sutton that a nuclear bomb wouldn't sort out.
Anyway, yep, thanks, I'll be around.

Gotta say I'd prefer the real Sutton - in Surrey - but hey ho, motorway access is a lot better your way. Every cloud 'an all that. Wink

Welcome to the forum.
I am a lover of Cairo, having been there on several occasions, but Amman that beats it.
Jordan and its people are the nicest in the middle east, the food is outstanding.

Best of luck.

Just as an update - I have been in Cairo until yesterday when I left with my family to come to Europe.
It is/was as bad as it seems and I think even though it is colder in Mansfield, it's a bit safer, except on Friday nights.
I'm off to Spain tomorrow though for family reasons and when I'll get back to Cairo I have no idea.
Cheers.

Just to update this - I've got a flight booked back out to Cairo for this coming Saturday. I left my car at the airport in the rush to get out but disconnected the batteries. I'll have to see if it'll start when I get there. I'll also have a heart attack when I find out the parking fees.

Let's hope there is still a car to start. I would imagine a few have been crushed by rookie tank drivers by now. affraid

My contact in Egypt says there is some animosity towards "foreigners".
Unrest seems to be on the increase in Libya.
Want to cover all three countries in one trip if possible.
