Wondered if anybody had ever owned or had Nissan Patrols previously. Again part of making informed decision as regarding future vehicle.

Looking possibly at Nissan Patrol Y60 4.2D or 2.8TD or Y61 3.0Di or 2.8TD as regards 2.8 was it just regarded as underpowered but still reliable or have there been problems with it. Budget will be less than £5000. clinking teacups

hello mugwump
I'v been driving a 96 y60 for a few years now, been down to gambia and back from preston,a year or so back. Its a 2.8 gr se td, never had a moments trouble with it(touch wood),but they are really underpowered when loaded ,If i could afford to change i go for the 4.2, its a sound motor and i like driving it. cheers1

PostSubject: Nissan Patrol 2.8   Sat Dec 22, 2012 7:04 am

A bit late I know but only just found your post. I have a 2.8 which I have had for 5 years. It is the last of the staight sixes first registered February 2000. With uprated suspension it has taken me all through Morocco down to Western Sahara and in all the time I have had it it has never missed a beat. I love it. Underpowered compared to a 4.2 but mostly you just have to learn how to drive it. Runs out of puff quickly on steep hills, but keep the rpm above 1800 and no real problem. On long tarmace roads going up mounains it won't get past 60 but so what?

Can you even get a 4.2 in the UK?

Avoid the 2001/2 ZD 30 engines. After that they sorted the problems.

Hi mugwump. Long time. Smile

Strangely enough I went through a similar dilema with the aim to perchase a Nissan patrol.
I bought a 2004 patrol 2.8 lwb auto to replace the terracan.
Long story short the patrol with the rear difflock on was formidable off road and poor on road. Cornered badly and was generally sluggish and in responseive on performance. The fuel consumption was disturbing, rivaling a straight 6 tvr.
It's a very strong engine & vehicle tho with durability in mind during its design.
Due to my dissapointment in the 2.8 patrol I sold it on. Only owning the vehicle for under 1 month it was quickly apparent that it was generally a step backboth on and off road compared to the Terracan.

Again this is just my view. If you bought one in the end, enjoy it, for what it is its still a good truck. But if your looking to change, try a newer or last model Terracan.

You can chip these engines for a reasonable power upgrade at reasonable prices, but a decent quality upgrade costs around £400; forget the cheap chips as they promise but never deliver, and overpowering them for BHP is detrimental for the torque delivery.

http://www.tunit.co.uk/product/vehicles-supported.php

These are my preferred choice as they deliver both power and torque, can be fitted by them or their agents of self fitted, and their warranty is excellent. Many have the ability to control how much of a power increase you want from a rotary selector.

Hi Folks once again thanks for the info. Certainly having been having a good thought as to what to get. Although with trying to build a business and take care of the day job and a possible house move on the horizon, things have been busy, was hoping to write a report on our visit to the pyrenees last year but have not got around to it.
Terracan will be with us for a while longer but is still going ok and did great on the hols, but does need some TLC. As for a change a vehicle this keeps going down the priority list at the moment. Although I have written off the Landcruisers and Patrols although great vehicles they are bit expensive to run.
The Terracan covers most things I need at the moment, able to carry and tow loads get me in and out of Show fields, commute daily, camping, although the problem I have for the future with the terracan is that spares are ltd and will get more so as time goes on.
So what I am looking at for the future is a Pajero/Shogun 3.2 or 2.8 diesels, they appear to be well put together reliable and spares/mods readily availiable. Also if you keep away from the main dealer not too expensive too buy.

Thumbs up on the 3.2 Shogun. Assassins pretty keyed up on them, I'm sure he will give you the bulletpoints.
